Painting concrete is normally only considered when it is required to cover an existing slab. For instance, after a crack has been repaired and then a concrete colorant can be used to cover the blemish.
For exterior areas that receive heavy foot traffic, the paint often wears away and the area will need repainting.
Fresh concrete should never be painted. Allow the concrete to cure for at least 28 days—follow the paint manufacturer's recommendations.
Do not apply curing compounds to concrete which will be painted. It will cause problems allowing the paint to bond to the concrete.
Concrete paint, sometimes referred to as cement paint, should be the type that breathes so any moisture that comes up through the concrete can vaporize and is not trapped beneath the surface causing the paint to blister. Review the paint manufacturers recommendations.
Before concrete can be painted, dirt, oil, and efflorescence must be removed from the concrete.
